How to make Pomegranate Peel Powder

In my previous blog, The Anti-ageing Benefits of Pomegranates, I asked you to keep the peel and to dry it out, ready for this blog on using that peel.

If you did that, you are now at no 4 of the images below and have a nice pile of crisp, dry pomegranate peel ready to grind into a powder.

To recap, here’s what you do:

Ever since I discovered the benefits of the beautiful pomegranate, I always have a jar of peel powder ready to mix with a range of regular, household ingredients!

I love oily face treatments!  Coconut oil is my favourite. I use it in my hair, in my bath and in my homemade toothpaste.  (Read my blog on why I make my own, and how to make homemade toothpaste).

Beauty Treatments with Pomegranate Peel Powder

Whether you put it on your face or in your face will depend on what you are treating!

Wrinkles and signs of ageing

Pomegranates promote cell growth and help prevent collagen from breaking down in your skin.

You will need:

2 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder

Coconut oil, enough to make a thick paste (Almond is fine too, if you have that)

OR

Rose water, if you have oily skin.

To do:

Slowly add enough almond oil or rose water to the peel powder to make a thick paste.

Apply to the face like any face pack and leave on for 20-30 mins. Wash off with luke warm water and follow with your favourite moisturiser.

Acne and pimples

The skin is rich in antioxidants, has healing properties and is good for keeping bacteria at bay.

You will need:

2 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder

Lemon juice, enough to make a thick paste

OR

Strong green tea, if you feel your skin needs a little kindness!

To do:

Slowly add enough lemon juice or green tea to the peel powder to make a thick paste.

Let it dry on your face, then wash off warm water and follow with your favourite moisturiser.

A natural moisturiser

Ellagic acid in the peel locks in moisture. Pomogranates protect the skin and restore the natural pH balance

You will need:

2 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder

Soy yoghurt to make a thick paste

To do:

Slowly add enough almond oil or rose water to the peel powder to make a thick paste.

Apply to the face like any face pack and leave on for 10 mins. Wash off with cold warm water and follow with your favourite moisturiser.

A face scrub

A natural remedy for removing dead skin and black heads.

You will need:

2 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder

1 tablespoon of brown sugar

1 tablespoon of avocado oil

2 drops of any essenial oil

Some ideas:  rose for mature skin, tea tree for troublesome skin, carrot for a youthful glow.

To do:

Mix it all up together, added the avocado oil last.  You want a thick paste.

Gently rub it into your face in a circular motion.  Avoid the tender area under your eyes.  Wash off with luke warm water and follow with your favourite moisturiser.

Preventing dandruff

This site has some interesting scientific data on the dandruff-preventing qualities of pomegranate peel.

You will need:

2 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder

Mix with your hair oil, if you use one, or I recommend coconut oil

To do:

Apply to the roots and massag into your scalp. Leave on for at least 2 hours, or overnight.

For healthy bones

Polyphenol antioxidants in pomegranates help in bone regeneration resulting in stronger bones and less risk of degeneration. That benefit extends to the cartilage.

You will need:

2 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder mixed in a glass of water.  Add a spoonful of lemon juice and a dash of rock salt if you want to make it taste better!

To do:

Drink at night to strengthen your bones.

Good for gut health

Tannins in the peel help to reduce inflammation of the intestines and improve digestion.

You will need:

1/2 cup pomegranate peel powder

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

3/4 cup soya yoghurt

1 pinch rock salt

To do:

Put all the ingredients into a blender and keep in the fridge.

Drink three times a week.

Home remedy for a sore throat

A natural remedy for relieving sore throats and tonsils.

You will need:

4 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder

One cup of water

To do:

Boil the peel powder in the water for a few minutes. Strain and let it cool.

Gargle twice a day, or more if the pain is severe.

Dental hygiene

Great for preventing bad breath, gingivitis, tooth decay and mouth ulcers.

You will need:

1 teaspoon of pomegranate peel powder in a glass of water.

To do:

Gargle with the mixture twice daily to prevent bad breath.

Massage your gums with the powder to prevent gum disease.

Mix the peel powder with a pinch of black pepper. Rub on your teeth for 2 minutes using your fingers to  prevent tooth decay.  Keep it on your teeth for 10 minutes then rinse with water.

Protect against heart disease

The plaque that forms in our arterids can cause serious cardiovascular complications. The antioxydants help fight against heart disease and lower cholesterol levels.

You will need:

1 tablespoons of pomegranate peel powder mixed into a glass of warm water.

To do:

Drink the mixture daily.

It’s delicious. Said nobody ever!
